2010 Adidas President's Day Weekend Tournament

HOSTED BY: Northwest Juniors Volleyball Club

February 13-15, 2010

Updated Tournament Information: last updated: 02/12/2010 12:49:10 PM

  • 2/10/10: U14 & U16 DIVISION 2 POOLS HAVE BEEN POSTED.

  • 2/10/2010: WE TRULY APOLOGIZE FOR THE DELAY IN GETTING 14 & 16 DIVISION 2 POOLS POSTED.  WE LOST A GYM SATURDAY EVENING AND HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD TO REPLACE IT.  WE ARE WORKING MULTIPLE FORMATS BASED ON WHICH GYM WE ARE ABLE TO SECURE FOR THIS TOURNAMENT.  AS SOON AS THE GYM IS CONFIRMED, WE WILL POST THE POOLS.  NO CHANGES WILL BE MADE IN REGARDS TO WAVES, SO ALL TEAMS KNOW APPROXIMATELY WHAT TIME THEY PLAY ON SATURDAY.

  • 2/8/2010: Pools posted for the following divisions: 18's, 16 Division 1, 15's, 14 Division 1.  We are still formatting the U16 and U14 Division 2 and should have them posted on Tuesday.

  • 2/8/2010: A reminder about the coaches meeting: Complete Playing Schedule will be in the Tournament Manual which will be distributed at the MANDATORY COACHES MEETING at the Holiday Inn Select - Grady Way, Renton at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.  Check-in begins at 6 p.m., please make sure to bring your current roster with USAV numbers and medical release forms to check-in.  Every team must be represented -- the representative must sign and verify the roster, show Medical Release forms, make updates (if any) to the tournament handbook, and get all information back to the team coach.

  • 2/5/2010: Teams in the U16 and U14 have been separated into Division 1 and Division 2 (see teams page).  We have done out due diligence in looking at Power League seeding and attempted to balance the field.  The division is at the discretion of the tournament director and not up for debate.  We apologize if your team was not selected in the division that you prefer.  Teams now know whether they are in the AM wave or the PM wave.  We expect to have sites and pools up Monday or Tuesday.

  • 1/22/2010: We have added a few sites, including Juanita HS in Kirkland (for U18's & U15's) and have expanded the field.  Check the TEAMS page for the list of accepted teams.

  • All coaches must bring a current copy of their rosters, do not mail them or fax them to us.  Coaches must also have their athletes' medical history forms in their possession.  We will check off both items at the coaches' meeting on Friday night, so bring them with you.

Seeding and tie-breaking procedures

Seeding for the tournament was done based on tournament results and placing in at Puget Sound Region events and Columbia Empire Power league (using January Results).  In order to simplify the tournament your progressive placing throughout the tournament will be based upon your seed and your finish within your pool; not on how your performance in pool compares to other teams in other pools.  This will make it simpler for coaches, fans, players, etc. to figure out exactly where they play next without having to wait for other pools to finish in order to place themselves within the next pool or playoff bracket.

There will be no playoff sets to settle ties.  Tie-breaking procedure will go as follows:

Two way tie (by match record    →  Head to head MATCH

Three way tie (by match record  →  1.  Set record (sets won vs. sets lost)

                                                    2.  Overall positive points among tied teams

                                                    3.  If still tied, overall positive points in pool

Complete Playing Schedule will be in the Tournament Manual which will be distributed at the MANDATORY COACHES MEETING at the Holiday Inn Select - Grady Way, Renton at 7:30 p.m.

TO ANSWER THE MAIN QUESTION WE HAVE RECEIVED: DOES THE COACH FOR EVERY TEAM HAVE TO ATTEND THE COACHES MEETING? NO, THEY DO NOT.  WE JUST NEED ALL ROSTERS TURNED IN AND VERIFIED AND TO SEE YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY FORMS DURING CHECK IN.  WE WILL ALSO HAND OUT A TEAM PACKET FOR EACH TEAM (SO THEY NEED TO PICK IT UP FOR EACH TEAM) AND WE WILL GO OVER ANY CHANGES AS WELL AS SITE-SPECIFIC INFORMATION AT THE COACHES MEETING.  YOU CAN SEND ONE (RESPONSIBLE) PERSON TO REPRESENT YOUR ENTIRE CLUB IF YOU WISH, SO LONG AS YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE TO VERIFY ROSTERS, AND IF A ROSTER IS INCORRECT OR ILLEGAL, THAT  TEAM WILL BE PENALIZED.  PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT THE LEAD OFFICIAL AT YOUR SUNDAY AND/OR SITE MAY WANT TO SEE YOUR ROSTER AS WELL (SO PLEASE KEEP COPIES WITH YOU).

Note: We reserve the right to move teams between divisions to allow for even numbers in AM wave and PM wave as well as for the best possible competition for all teams in the tournament (for example, 32 teams in D1-PM, 16 teams in D2-AM will become 24 D2 AM and 24 D1 PM).  We will consider several factors in making our decision as to which teams will be in Division 1 and which teams will be in Division 2 including, ranking in your region and numbers of teams from your club in each division.

Thank-you for your interest in the 2010 Adidas President’s Day Weekend Tournament in Seattle, Washington. Over the years, this tournament has evolved into a great three-day tournament with quality competition for teams of all skill levels.  Taking into consideration the tournament format, the fact that there are paid officials on each court, and great venues, it is probably the best value for your money.  The tournament will be held at various schools in and around the South Seattle area.  The tournament will be a three-day wave progressive pool play format similar to that of a national qualifier (AM wave 8 am - 2 pm, PM wave 2:30 pm - 8: 30 pm).

This tournament provides an excellent opportunity for out of state teams (and older teams not able or unwilling to participate in the Las Vegas Invitational) to spend the three-day weekend in the great city of Seattle, playing volleyball against some of the best teams in the Northwest.   This event has been a huge success in years past and will offer great competition for all most groups at a reasonable price. With the increased popularity of the U16’s division over the past few years, this tournament will be the premier early season event for U16 teams in the Western United States -- in 2005, we expanded your U15 and U16 options to proved a better experience for teams of all skill levels, in 2006 we expanded the 14's to include two divisions.  The tournament format will be pool play on Saturday and Sunday with playoffs on the Monday (every team is guaranteed a minimum of seven matches and play on all three days). Play should continue no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, President’s Day, so plan accordingly.

There is a $25 discount for very early registration and a $25 late fee for entries postmarked after January 16th, 2009.  Entries after the deadline will only be accepted to fill the tournament -- so please call first.  Any teams wishing to drop before January 16th will lose a $50 administrative fee.  Any teams wishing to drop out of the tournament between January 16th and January 23rd, 2009 will lose 1/2 of their entry fee. After January 23rd, 2009 there will be no refund of entry fee.

Check-in and a coaches meeting will be held Friday February 13th beginning at 7:30 pm at the Headquarters Hotel  Please bring team roster to check-in your team.  You cannot check in without your roster!  All teams must send a reliable representative check-in Friday night otherwise they can not play Saturday.   The coach’s meeting will relay any scheduling changes that would not show on the playing schedule.  We post the playing schedule on the website as a courtesy, with expectations that all teams will have a representative on-site at the coaches meeting. The most updated playing schedule and other pertinent information will be provided in this meeting. You will receive the complete pool play schedule along with all other pertinent information.
